  then my boss found the ( porter cable stair ease router template jig ) WOW, what a pleasure that jig was, took a quarter of the time to do, then the previous method. In my beginning years as a home builder, the man i worked for bought me a stair jig, we built 3 to 4,000 sq ft. homes in ct. i became the stair man , when the rest of the crew would move on to the next home to be built, i would stay and build the... Locate mounting holes/fastening holes, in 2 places on the template, one on the rise and one on the run,  .  to accommodate #10 FH wood screws. If you can find one today, for $300---get it.   If you have a pattern, one can be made/machined from 1/4'' alum plate. It has to be made, so that the template can be use for both the left and right risers, using the same template. and now i am 48 , and i have to find another one like it. i found one on e-bay, for $300. Layout reference guide lines can be marked on the stair risers, to locate/position the template. i use to do it with a square and brass knocks, as we called it, mark them all out and i then would make a bunch of cuts , within the marks i made, with a skill saw and then chisel all the meterial out, long process to say. it's a must have jig for woodworkers that build stairs. Fasten the template to the riser with the wood srews, and route the slots.
