A melon would like a root area that is at least 18″ deep and 3′ across but it would use much wider area if you let it. if you decide to kill the grass before you dig or plant then cardboard works very well. like, they cannt live in a swampy atmosphere even though they Do like steady food and water. If the plant seems to slow in progress after a couple months then adding more compost or amendment to the top of the soil will give more food. if u add 1/3 amendment to your native soil then it would work well. but also mounds can give a little extra root room (opposed to flat ground) If the lower soil has already been dug into and loosened/amendments. like a few inches of compost spread on top. The mounds are mainly because it ensures the root area gets Good Drainage.
